Melbourne and Victoria celebrates the 2017 Chinese New Year Festival with light installations, cultural performances and Asian food celebrations. Festivities are taking place across the city and state until 12 February.

Highlights include Tai Chi and dragon boat trials, performances by the Beijing Dance Academy and China’s Three Tenors and a Chinese New Year concert by the Chinese Music Orchestra.

Chinese Fortunes, M.A.D.E

<p>MADE presents Chinese Fortunes, an exhibition exploring the individual stories of early Chinese Australians &ndash; business people, traders, miners, gardeners, herbalists, detectives, interpreters, entertainers, publicans &ndash; and the rich diversity of Chinese Australian history leading up to Federation.</p> <p><strong>Website</strong>:<a href="www.made.org" target="_blank"> www.made.org</a></p>

<p>Celebrate with weekend evening events along Harbour Esplanade - Asian cuisine and drinks as the sun sets; a spectacular light show at 888 Collins Street (arguably Melbourne&rsquo;s luckiest address) from sunset to midnight, playing every hour on the hour and, don&rsquo;t miss the Chinese New Year-themed LED light show at the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel on every night.&nbsp; Remember to catch the free tram to Harbour Esplanade. Queen Victoria Market

<p><strong>Dates: 28 January, 1 February, 11 &amp; 12 February:</strong></p> <p>Melbourne's premier market showcases the best of Asian cuisine and food-related entertainment. Chinese music, food vendors and noodle making demonstrations. Free.</p>

Chinese Museum

<p><strong>Dates: 4 &amp; 5 and 10 &amp; 11 February: </strong> Kids of all ages will be invited to create giant dragons to intricate lanterns and to try Lion Dance lessons, culminating in a dance performance. Free. A Han Dynasty Exhibition showcasing an incredible period of Chinese history, ideas and innovation. First 88 children who visit over these days receive FREE entry.</p> <p><strong>Dates: 23 - 29 January: </strong> Myriad activities in Chinatown continuing the tradition of Chinese New Year with the Millennium Dai Loong Dragon Parade on Sunday 29 January.
